Candy and resin—what could be sweeter? At first glance, candy trays may seem like an unusual mix, but they’re quickly becoming a favorite for home décor, parties, and unique gift ideas. Here's how I make these playful and fun trays that are as beautiful as they are functional.
1. Choosing the Right Candies
One of the biggest challenges in making candy trays is finding the perfect candy. Not all candies can withstand the heat of resin curing, which can cause them to melt or lose their shape. Through trial and error, I’ve learned which candies hold up best to the process, from hard candies to gummies. Each candy needs to maintain its color and texture when sealed in resin, and that requires testing to ensure the right candy is used. Unforutnately chocolate candies such as Hershey Kisses and any chocolate that can seep will melt and destroy a tray!
2. The Process of Sealing Candy in Resin
Once I’ve selected the candies, it’s time to prepare the base for the tray. I carefully arrange the candies in the acrylic trays, making sure they’re placed just right to create a visually appealing design. Then, I pour a layer of food-safe resin over the candy, slowly and evenly, to ensure it encapsulates each piece perfectly. The resin needs time to cure, and this is where patience comes into play. Each tray is poured in multiple layers to prevent the resin heating too hot that the candies melt. Each layer takes 8-12 hours to cure before the next layer and the tray will take up to 48 hours to fully set, so I allow enough time for the resin to harden completely.
3. Customizing Your Candy Tray
I offer custom candy trays, allowing you to select your favorite candies or colors to create a personalized piece. Whether you want a fun rainbow theme, a chocolatey vibe, or a pastel-colored tray, I can work with you to bring your idea to life. Custom trays are perfect for special occasions like birthdays, bridal showers, or even as a sweet touch to your kitchen counter. I can even put a message into the middle of the tray in vinyl and seal it for a seamless look!
4. Fun Uses for Candy Trays
These trays aren’t just for candy—they’re versatile and fun! You can use them as cookie trays, candy displays, or even as décor pieces for themed parties. Imagine serving your favorite sweets on a candy tray that’s just as sweet as the treats themselves! They also make great conversation starters and unique gifts for friends and family.
